Aqueous means dissolved in water. When a chemical equation shows the state symbol (aq) after a formula, it is telling you that the substance is not sitting there as a solid or a gas: its particles are spread evenly through water. So NaCl(aq) means sodium chloride dissolved in water, not a lump of salt and not molten salt. The aqueous meaning in chemistry matters, because most reactions you will study, and every reaction inside your body, happen in water.

What does aqueous mean?

Aqueous comes from aqua, the Latin word for water, and in chemistry it carries a precise meaning. A substance is aqueous when it has dissolved in water, so that its particles are separated from one another and spread evenly through the liquid.

Three words describe any solution:

  • The solute is the substance that dissolves, such as salt.
  • The solvent is the substance doing the dissolving, such as water.
  • The solution is the uniform mixture that results, such as salt water.

An aqueous solution is simply one in which the solvent is water. The aqueous definition says nothing about concentration: a barely detectable trace of copper sulfate is aqueous, and so is a solution close to saturated.

Dissolved is not the same as mixed. Sand stirred into water forms a suspension: the grains stay whole and settle. Salt in water is aqueous because the particles are separated right down to individual ions, and they never settle out.

What do the state symbols (s), (l), (g) and (aq) mean?

State symbols go in brackets immediately after each formula. They tell you the physical state of every substance involved, and they are not decoration: NaCl(s) and NaCl(aq) behave completely differently.

What happens when a compound dissolves in water?

Water molecules are polar. Oxygen pulls the shared bonding electrons toward itself, so the oxygen end carries a small negative charge and the two hydrogen ends carry small positive charges. Those partial charges do all the work.

Drop sodium chloride into water and the molecules crowd around the crystal surface. Negative oxygen ends are attracted to the Na+ ions; positive hydrogen ends are attracted to the Cl ions. This pull, called an ion-dipole attraction, is strong enough to peel ions away from the lattice:

NaCl(s) → Na+(aq) + Cl(aq)

Splitting apart like this is called dissociation. Each freed ion ends up inside an oriented shell of water molecules, a hydration shell, which keeps it away from the oppositely charged ions and stops the crystal reforming. That is why NaCl(aq) is written as two separate ions: there are no sodium chloride molecules in salt water.

Not everything dissolves that way. Sugar is molecular rather than ionic, so when sucrose dissolves, whole neutral molecules separate and become hydrated, but no ions form. Sugar water is still aqueous; it just contains no charged particles.

Aqueous or liquid: what is the difference?

This is the confusion that costs the most marks in exams. Liquid and aqueous are not two versions of the same idea. (l) describes a pure substance in the liquid state. (aq) describes a substance dissolved in water, and it always implies water is present.

Three cases settle it:

  • H2O(l) is pure water. Water here is the solvent, not the solute, so it is never labelled (aq). Writing H2O(aq) would mean water dissolved in water, which is meaningless.
  • NaCl(aq) is salt dissolved in water. The salt is the solute and the water is the solvent, and the mixture as a whole is a liquid.
  • NaCl(l) is molten salt, heated past its melting point of about 801 °C. No water is present at all. It conducts electricity, but only because the ions are mobile in the melt.

Two rules follow. If water is the solvent, write H2O(l) or leave it out of the equation. And if a substance is dissolved in something other than water, such as ethanol, the solution is not aqueous.

Why does so much chemistry happen in water?

Water is liquid across a wide, convenient range, from 0 °C to 100 °C at one atmosphere. It also dissolves an unusually large number of ionic and polar substances, which is why it is sometimes called the universal solvent. That nickname overstates things: oils, waxes and many gases dissolve very poorly.

Dissolving matters because reactions need contact. Two solids pressed together only meet at their surfaces, so the reaction is slow and often incomplete. In solution, particles move freely and collide constantly.

Biology runs on the same principle. Living cells are typically around 70% water by mass, and cytoplasm, blood plasma and seawater are all aqueous solutions. Nutrients, wastes and signalling molecules travel dissolved, and enzymes only work in a watery environment.

Do aqueous solutions conduct electricity?

Some do, some do not, and the deciding factor is whether the solution contains free ions. Charge only flows through a liquid when charged particles are free to move.

An electrolyte is a substance that produces ions when it dissolves in water, giving a solution that conducts. Chemists sort them into three groups:

  • Strong electrolytes dissociate almost completely. Sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide are typical, and their solutions conduct well.
  • Weak electrolytes ionize only partly. Acetic acid (in vinegar) and ammonia are the usual examples: most of the dissolved particles stay intact, so conductivity is poor.
  • Nonelectrolytes dissolve without forming ions at all. Sucrose and ethanol fall here, and their aqueous solutions do not conduct.

Conduction works because ions physically travel: positive ions drift toward the negative electrode and negative ions toward the positive one. More free ions means more current for the same voltage.

One caveat is worth knowing: pure water is a very poor conductor but not a perfect insulator, because a tiny fraction of its molecules self-ionize. At room temperature only about one molecule in 500 million is ionized at any instant. Tap water and sweat conduct far better because they carry dissolved mineral ions, which is why water and electricity are a dangerous combination.
