A chemical solution is a perfectly uniform mixture containing two or more separate substances. One substance completely dissolves into another substance to create the final mixture. The resulting mixture looks exactly the same throughout its entire total volume.

Chemists identify the primary substance in the mixture as the chemical solvent. The solvent acts to dissolve the other added chemical components of the mixture. The substance being actively dissolved into the solvent is known as the solute.

Chemical solutions are considered completely homogeneous down to the microscopic molecular level. Their chemical makeup and physical properties remain identical throughout the entire mixture. Many students mistakenly assume that chemical solutions must always exist as liquids.

In reality, chemical solutions can naturally exist in any common physical state. A solid metal alloy like brass is a perfectly valid solid solution. Breathable air is an excellent example of a naturally occurring gaseous solution.

Liquid solutions using water as the main solvent are called aqueous solutions. The concentration of a solution describes exactly how much solute is currently present. A dilute solution contains a relatively small amount of the dissolved solute.
