Practical guides for teachers running a chemistry course, especially if it is your first year with the subject. Using the dictionary in class

The rest of this site is a glossary of more than 1,517 chemistry terms, written answer-first: the meaning arrives in the opening sentence, with the detail, an example and related terms underneath. That shape is deliberate, and it makes a few classroom uses easy.

  • Pre-reading. Send students to a topic page before a unit rather than a chapter. Each one lists every term in that branch of chemistry.
  • Vocabulary lists. Any A–Z page or topic page can be pulled straight into a handout.
  • Working problems. The calculators show every step, so a student who gets a wrong answer can see which step it went wrong at rather than only that it did.
  • Retrieval practice. The chemistry games run in a browser with no sign-up, which makes them usable as a five-minute opener.

Everything on the site is free to use and free to link to. If you find an error in a definition, please tell us — teacher corrections are the ones we act on fastest.

No. There is no sign-up, no paywall and no login anywhere on the site. Every page, calculator and game is free to use and free to share with a class.

Can I copy this material into my own handouts?

Where does the teaching advice come from?

It is drawn from what practising chemistry teachers describe doing in their own classrooms, gathered from teacher community discussions in August 2026 and written up here in general form. It reflects working practice rather than formal research, and it is not aligned to any single curriculum or standard.
