Chemistry Lab Safety: A Start-of-Year Checklist
Ask a room of chemistry teachers what to do in the first two weeks and the answers diverge on almost everything except this. Safety is the one part of the course opening where experienced teachers describe the same sequence, in the same order, for the same reasons. Here it is.
The four-part opening
In order, before any student handles a chemical:
- Teach safety directly and quiz it, keeping the marked quiz on file as documentation.
- Have the safety rules signed by the student and a parent or guardian.
- Add a signed lab contract covering conduct at the bench.
- Enforce it visibly on the first practical, not the third.
1. Teach it directly, then quiz it
Run a safety lesson and show a safety video, then give a short quiz. Keep the quiz easy to mark — its purpose is not assessment. It is documentation. A marked quiz on file is evidence that you covered the major points with a named student on a known date, and that record matters far more than the score does.
2. Get the rules signed, by the student and a parent
Use an established safety rules document rather than writing your own; several laboratory suppliers publish one free, and their versions have been reviewed more thoroughly than anything you will draft in August. Have students take the accompanying safety test, then have both the student and a parent or guardian sign the rules. The countersignature is the part teachers consistently say to keep.
3. Add a lab contract
A short contract, also signed by student and guardian, covering conduct at the bench: no unauthorised experiments, no eating or drinking, report every spill and breakage, follow instructions in order. Some teachers now pair this with a short online safety module students work through in their own time, alongside — not instead of — the direct instruction.
4. Enforce it visibly, on the first lab day
This is the step that determines whether the first three worked. A student who arrives in sandals or loose clothing with nothing to change into does not do the lab; they do a written version of it at a desk. Applied once, in front of everyone, on the very first practical, it rarely needs applying again. Applied for the first time in March, it reads as arbitrary.
A concentration ceiling worth adopting
One rule of thumb comes up repeatedly from experienced high school teachers: nothing more concentrated than 0.1 M hydrochloric acid, and the equivalent restraint on everything else on the shelf. If you are making that up from a stock bottle, the dilution calculator and the molarity calculator will do the arithmetic.
The reasoning is not timidity. It is that the risk and the educational return come apart very quickly as concentration rises. A dilute acid still demonstrates pH, still runs a titration and everything else in analytical chemistry, still drives a visible chemical change, and still teaches every concept the strong version would — while a splash is an inconvenience rather than an injury. Almost every genuinely engaging school chemistry lab can be run at low hazard, and the ones that cannot are usually better as demonstrations.
Inventory before you need it
If you have inherited a prep room, audit it before the first lab rather than during it. Three things are worth knowing early:
- What is actually on the shelves, checked against what the labs in your sequence require. Ordering in September is normal; discovering the gap in November is not.
- What is degraded, unlabelled or older than you are. Long-settled school prep rooms accumulate containers nobody has opened in decades. An unlabelled bottle is not a mystery to solve; it is a disposal problem.
- How disposal actually works in your district, and who pays for it. Hazardous waste removal is not something a teacher can arrange alone, and it frequently needs a budget line that does not exist by default. Find out who signs for it before you generate any.
The equipment lesson comes before the chemistry
Before the first real lab, spend a period on the equipment itself: how to read a meniscus, how to use the balance, how to light and adjust a burner, where the eyewash and shower are and how to operate them, and what to do about a spill or breakage.
