Laboratory safety
This is the most important thing on this page. Nothing on this Site is a laboratory procedure, a safety protocol, or a set of instructions to follow. Our explanations describe what happens chemically; they deliberately omit the hazard controls, quantities, equipment, ventilation, and protective measures that real laboratory work requires.
Do not attempt to reproduce any reaction, preparation, or demonstration described here. Chemical work must only be carried out in a properly equipped laboratory, under the supervision of a qualified instructor or professional, following a risk assessment and the current safety data sheet for every substance involved. Many common chemicals are toxic, corrosive, flammable, or explosive, and some combinations that appear harmless are extremely dangerous.
If you are a student, follow your teacher's instructions and your institution's safety rules, not this website.

Values are rounded for readability and may not carry the precision required for research, analytical, industrial, or regulatory work. For anything consequential, use a current authoritative source such as IUPAC, NIST, or the manufacturer's certificate of analysis.
