What is general chemistry?
General chemistry is the foundation course of the subject. It covers the ideas every other branch assumes you already know: what atoms and elements are, how they combine into compounds, how chemists count particles using the mole, and how chemical change is written down and balanced in an equation.
Most students meet it as a first high school or first year college chemistry course. The topics are deliberately broad rather than deep, because the aim is to give you a working vocabulary and a set of tools you can carry into organic, physical, analytical, inorganic chemistry or biochemistry.
What general chemistry covers
- Atomic structure: protons, neutrons, electrons, isotopes and electron configuration
- The periodic table and the trends that run across and down it
- Bonding: ionic, covalent and metallic, and the shapes molecules take
- The mole, molar mass and stoichiometry, which turn equations into measurable quantities
- States of matter, solutions, concentration and solubility
- Reaction types, acids and bases, and an introduction to energy and rates
Why the vocabulary matters
Chemistry uses ordinary words in exact ways. A solution is not simply a liquid, a compound is not the same as a mixture, and mass is not weight. Most early confusion comes from those shifts in meaning rather than from the mathematics. Each definition below states the term plainly, then gives an example and the questions students most often ask about it.
