Physical properties are the defining features of a substance that are readily apparent or easily measurable without altering the molecular structure of the material. For example, mass, length, and total volume are extensive properties because they change if you add or remove material. If you cut a block of wood in half, its mass and volume change, making those properties extensive. Intensive properties, conversely, do not depend on the amount of matter and remain constant regardless of the sample size.
Color, density, melting point, and boiling point are classic intensive properties. A single drop of water and a massive lake both share the exact same density and will both boil at 100 degrees Celsius under standard atmospheric pressure. Because they remain constant, intensive properties are particularly useful for identifying unknown substances.
Changes in physical properties often accompany physical changes, such as phase transitions. When liquid water freezes into solid ice, its physical properties, such as density and hardness, change significantly.
