Petroleum pumped directly from the ground contains very long carbon chains. These large hydrocarbon molecules are thick and difficult to burn efficiently. Refineries use thermal cracking to chop these long chains into shorter pieces.

The process requires extreme temperatures over 800 degrees Celsius and very high pressure. This intense heat literally rips the strong bonds between carbon atoms apart. The break splits the molecule evenly to create two highly reactive fragments called free radicals.
