Definition of iris diaphragm

1) used in
fluorimeters to control the amount of radiation from the source; 
consists of a series of overlapping plates arranged to move so that
a roughly circular opening of variable size is produced.  This
is achieved by maintaining a nearly constant angle between the edges
of adjacent plates.
