The lanthanides are a group of fifteen metallic elements at the bottom of the periodic table. They stretch from atomic number 57 up to 71. Chemists often call them rare earth metals because they always mix together in nature.

The lanthanides share almost identical chemical behaviors because of how their electrons arrange themselves. In most regular atoms, new electrons fill the outer shell and change how the atom reacts. In lanthanides, the new electrons bury themselves deep inside a hidden inner orbital.

Because their outer shells look exactly the same, they react with other chemicals in the exact same way. They almost always lose three electrons to form an ion with a +3 charge. When polished, they look like shiny silver metals, but they tarnish very quickly in the air.

In nature, you never find a pure chunk of just one lanthanide metal. They always clump together tightly in the exact same rocks and minerals. Mining companies must use extreme and costly chemical baths to force them apart.

Students often mistakenly think the name rare earth means these metals are hard to find. In reality, most lanthanides are much more common in the ground than silver or gold. They are only considered rare because they never gather into rich, pure metal veins.
