Definition and meaning of Vector in chemistry.

A vector is a quantity that has both a size and a direction in space. In chemistry, vectors describe things like bond dipole moments, velocity, and force. A plain number on its own cannot describe them fully.

Some measurements need more than a number to make sense. Saying a car moves at 60 miles per hour gives its speed, which is just a size. Saying it moves north at 60 miles per hour gives its velocity, which is a vector.

Molecular polarity is the clearest chemistry example. Each polar bond has a bond dipole, a small vector that points from the positive end of the bond toward the negative end. To find out whether the whole molecule is polar, you add those bond vectors together while taking their directions into account.

Shape decides the answer. In carbon dioxide the molecule is straight, so its two bond dipoles are equal and point in exactly opposite directions. They cancel, and the molecule is nonpolar even though each individual bond is polar.

In water the two bonds sit at an angle of about 104.5 degrees, so they do not cancel, and water ends up strongly polar. Vectors follow their own math rules. You add them head to tail rather than simply adding the numbers.

Two vectors of the same size can add up to something twice as large, or to nothing at all, depending on which way they point. A common student mistake is assuming that polar bonds always produce a polar molecule. Symmetry can cancel them out completely, as carbon dioxide shows.

Water, H2O, is bent rather than straight. Each O-H bond pulls electron density toward the oxygen atom, which gives two bond dipole vectors. Because the molecule is bent, those two vectors do not cancel each other. They add together into a net dipole moment that points from between the hydrogen atoms toward the oxygen. That leftover vector is the reason water dissolves salts so well.
