A quadrupole is a complex electric charge distribution with four distinct poles. It consists of two positive charges and two negative charges arranged very symmetrically. These four charges are positioned so that they act exactly like two opposing dipoles.

The easiest way to picture a quadrupole is to imagine a flat square. You place positive charges on two opposite corners and negative charges on the other two. The overall square object maintains a perfectly neutral total electrical charge.
