Nucleation is the very first physical step when a substance changes into a new state of matter. It is the exact moment when a solid crystal forms from a liquid, or a gas bubble forms in water. This tiny, stable starting seed is called a nucleus.

Matter usually needs a little extra push to change its state. This process requires enough energy to overcome a natural physical barrier. The freely moving molecules must gather together and build a stable physical cluster.
If the early cluster is too small, it simply falls apart and dissolves again. Once the cluster reaches a critical size, it becomes totally stable and grows rapidly. There are two main types of this starting process.
The first type is called homogeneous nucleation. This happens when the new phase forms completely randomly in the middle of a pure, clean liquid or gas. It is quite rare because it requires a huge amount of energy to start.
The second type is called heterogeneous nucleation. This happens when the new phase forms around a floating piece of dust, a tiny scratch, or a rough container surface. The dirt or scratch drastically lowers the energy barrier.
It provides a cozy resting place for the first few molecules to gather. Because it takes much less energy, this second type is extremely common in the real world.
