An ion is an atom or a group of covalently bonded atoms that carries a net electric charge. This charge appears when the particle has gained or lost one or more electrons compared to a neutral atom or molecule. Ions can be positively or negatively charged.

An atom becomes an ion whenever its number of electrons no longer matches its number of protons. Losing electrons leaves extra positive charge, forming a cation. Gaining electrons leaves extra negative charge, forming an anion.
Ions form in several ways. Ionization can strip or add electrons using energy, such as light or heat. Ionic bonding transfers electrons between a metal and a nonmetal.
Some compounds also dissociate into ions when dissolved in a polar solvent like water. Because ions carry charge, they conduct electricity whenever they can move freely, such as in molten salts or aqueous solutions. This property makes ions central to ionic bonding and to the electrolyte balance that keeps living cells functioning properly.
Ions are also central to acid-base chemistry, where H+ and OH- ions define acidity. Ions also follow predictable charge patterns based on their position on the periodic table. Group 1 metals typically form +1 cations, group 2 metals form +2 cations, and group 17 nonmetals form -1 anions.
Each tends to gain or lose electrons to reach a stable noble-gas configuration. Transition metals are an exception, since many can form more than one stable cation charge, such as iron forming both Fe2+ and Fe3+.
