Electroplating is a process that uses electric current to coat a conductive object with a thin layer of metal. The metal comes from ions dissolved in a surrounding solution called an electrolyte.

The object being plated becomes the cathode of an electrolytic cell. A bar of the plating metal, or sometimes an inert conductor, serves as the anode. Both electrodes sit in an electrolyte solution containing dissolved ions of the plating metal.

When electric current flows, metal cations near the cathode gain electrons and are reduced into solid metal atoms that stick to the object's surface. If the anode is made of the same reactive metal, its atoms lose electrons and dissolve into solution, replacing the ions used up at the cathode and keeping the plating bath at a steady concentration.

Several factors control how thick and smooth the final coating turns out, including current density, plating time, electrolyte composition, and temperature. Industries rely on electroplating to improve corrosion resistance, boost wear resistance, increase electrical conductivity, or simply make objects look more attractive with a shiny, uniform metal finish.

Chrome plating on car parts and gold plating on jewelry and electrical connectors are two of the most familiar everyday examples of this process.
